Designed as a true extension of the school’s educational mission, the landscape at East Somerville Community School creates a network of purposeful outdoor spaces that support learning, play, and community connection within a dense urban setting. A series of courtyards and play areas offer distinct yet interconnected experiences: a library courtyard features a gently sculpted artificial turf mound that invites reading, gathering, and quiet reflection; a learning garden courtyard provides hands-on opportunities for students to grow food and engage with ecological systems; and an active playscape combines contemporary playground equipment with a universally accessible path that winds to the top of a mounded hill, encouraging movement, discovery, and inclusive play. Artificial turf slopes allow children to run, climb, and slide freely, while durable materials and planting strategies balance long-term performance with moments of softness and color. Together, these spaces foster curiosity, physical activity, and social interaction—reinforcing the school grounds as a vibrant, equitable environment for learning beyond the classroom. The exterior features around the student services building has contributed to the LEED NC Gold.
